Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 12, 2026
1. Introduction
OpenedFile, the website at openedfile.com, is run by one individual, referred to in this policy as "we", "us", or "our". We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we handle your data. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your personal data.
By using our website, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree with any part of this policy, please do not use our services.
2. How We Handle Your Files
Your files are never uploaded to our servers. All file conversion and processing on OpenedFile happens entirely within your web browser using client-side technologies such as JavaScript, WebAssembly, and the HTML5 Canvas API. Whichever tool you use — to view a file's contents, convert it to another format, extract an archive, create a password-protected ZIP, or identify a file's format — your files remain on your device at all times.
We do not have access to, collect, store, or transmit any files that you process using our tools. No file data passes through our servers. This design is fundamental to our service and ensures complete privacy for your documents, images, and other files.
3. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
We use the cookies and similar technologies listed below. Until you make a choice, a banner at the bottom of the page asks whether to allow analytics and advertising cookies. You can change your choice at any time with “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page.
- Stored in your browser (necessary): We keep up to two small values in your browser's localStorage: your theme (light or dark mode, if you change it) and your cookie choice. They stay on your device and are not sent to us.
- Analytics cookies: We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the website, such as pages visited, time spent on pages, and general geographic location. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, these cookies are set only after you choose “Accept All”. Elsewhere they are set from your first visit, before you make a choice. Wherever you are, choosing “Necessary Only” (in the banner, or later through “Cookie settings”) stops their use and deletes the Google Analytics cookies already set (_ga and _ga_3DQ439LCJZ); pages open in other tabs follow the same choice. While analytics cookies are off, Google Analytics still receives cookieless pings (Google's consent mode) about what happens on the page — for example page views, how far you scroll, which tool you used, the file's size range and detected format, whether it worked, whether you downloaded the result, and counts such as the number of contacts or attachments. They never include file names or contents. Each page uses a new one-time identifier, so your browser is not recognized across pages or visits. An action or a page load just before you choose may still be sent under the earlier setting. You can also opt out of Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
- Advertising cookies: We may display advertisements through Google AdSense. “Accept All” also allows advertising cookies and ad personalization, but they are used only if we show ads; with “Necessary Only” they are not used. If we show ads, Google AdSense may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our website or other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
4. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services:
- Google AdSense: May provide advertisements on our website. Google may collect and use data for ad personalization. For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.
- Google Analytics: Helps us analyze website traffic and usage patterns. See Google's Privacy Policy for details.
- Google Fonts: Provides the Inter typeface. Every page loads it from Google's servers, whatever your cookie choice, so your IP address and browser details reach Google. See Google's Privacy Policy.
- Cloudflare: Provides hosting and CDN services. Cloudflare may process certain technical data (IP addresses, request headers) for security and performance purposes. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
5. Information We Collect
We do not collect personal information directly. However, the third-party services listed above may automatically collect certain technical information, including:
- IP address (anonymized by Google Analytics)
- Browser type and version
- Operating system
- Pages visited and time spent on each page
- Referring website URL
- General geographic location (country/region level)
6. GDPR Compliance (European Users)
If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), you have certain data protection rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These include:
- Right to Access: You can request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.
- Right to Rectification: You can request correction of inaccurate personal data.
- Right to Erasure: You can request deletion of your personal data.
- Right to Restriction: You can request that we restrict processing of your data.
- Right to Data Portability: You can request your data in a machine-readable format.
- Right to Object: You can object to processing based on legitimate interests.
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at contact@openedfile.com. We will respond to your request within 30 days.
7. CCPA Compliance (California Residents)
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you specific rights regarding your personal information:
- Right to Know: You can request what personal information we collect and how it is used.
- Right to Delete: You can request deletion of your personal information.
- Right to Opt-Out: You have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information.
- Right to Non-Discrimination: You will not be discriminated against for exercising your rights.
We do not sell or share your personal information. To exercise your rights, contact us at contact@openedfile.com.
8. Data Retention
Since we do not collect personal data directly, there is no personal data stored on our servers. Our Google Analytics property keeps event-level data for 2 months and user-level data for 14 months after your last activity (aggregated reports are kept longer). You can request deletion of your analytics data by contacting us.
Your theme and cookie choice, stored in your browser's localStorage, persist until you clear your browser data or change them. Google Analytics cookies (_ga and _ga_3DQ439LCJZ) expire two years after your last visit; some browsers shorten this (Chrome to 400 days). If you choose “Necessary Only”, they are deleted at that point (see section 3).
9. Children's Privacy
Our services are not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have inadvertently collected information from a child, please contact us and we will take steps to delete it.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable laws. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a revised "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
