How to Open a .clip File
A .clip file is a layered Clip Studio Paint document. Only Clip Studio Paint opens it properly — but the format is less opaque than it looks, and there is usually an easier way to get what you need.
Why it will not open
- It is a layered working file, not a picture. Layers, masks, vector line art and text are all stored separately, so there is no single image to display.
- The format is proprietary and undocumented. No mainstream image editor imports it, and Photoshop will not open it.
- Files are often large — hundreds of megabytes for illustration work — which rules out most upload-based converters.
How to open it
Ask for an exported image
- 1 If you only need to see or use the artwork, this is by far the fastest route.
- 2 In Clip Studio Paint: File > Export (Single Layer) > PNG or PSD.
- 3 Exporting to PSD keeps the layers and opens in Photoshop, GIMP, Krita and Photopea — useful when the layers actually matter to you.
Open it properly
- 1 Clip Studio Paint offers a free trial, and a free tier with daily time limits on some platforms. For a one-off file, the trial is the straightforward answer.
- 2 It runs on Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android and Chromebook, so the file will open on whatever you have.
What is inside a .clip
The file starts with a CSFCHUNK header and contains an embedded SQLite database holding the document structure and layer data. Community tools use that to pull out layer images without Clip Studio Paint. It is genuinely possible, but it is a workaround rather than a supported path, and it will not reconstruct the document.
Not to be confused with .clipx or .clips
Clip Studio uses several related extensions — .clip for documents, .clipx and others for exported settings or materials. A very small .clip is more likely a settings file than artwork.
